authority in Australia with a population of over 900,000. The total area
of the city is in excess of 1220 square kilometres and is Queensland’s
business, political, events, and cultural capital. Its pleasant
year-round climate and host of community amenities enables residents and
visitors to experience all the excitement and diversity of a big city,
but at a less frenetic and more welcoming pace. The Lord Mayor of
Brisbane is Councillor Campbell Newman.

around Brisbane. Residents can pay council charges on-line, find
information about community organisations, search the entertainment
guide, and access links to local businesses and services on the
Internet. Ourbrisbane.com is an initiative of Brisbane City Council
through the e-Brisbane project.
Asia-Pacific Cities
Summit

The Asia Pacific Cities
Summit provides an opportunity for local government leaders and
international business representatives to discuss commercial trade,
economic growth and investment, urban development, environmental
planning and mutual business opportunities. Brisbane City Council
facilitates the bi-annual conference, the location of which has
alternated between Brisbane and other international cities. The city of
Incheon in Korea will host the next Asia Pacific Cities Summit in 2009.
Brisbane hosted the 2007 conference with representatives from 108 cities
from 28 countries.
World Bank Staff
Exchange Program

Brisbane City Council was
the first local government authority to participate in the World Bank
Staff Exchange Program. Between 2000 and 2001 Brisbane City Council’s
Robyn Renneberg worked at the World Bank’s Washington D.C. Headquarters
in the Urban and City Management division, while the World Bank’s
Toshiaki Keicho worked for Brisbane City Enterprises as an Urban
Management Consultant. The initiative aims to enhance the professional
and technical skills of professional staff, promote cross-cultural
understanding, and improve the quality of life for people in the world’s
emerging economies.
